Driver charged with murder in Lewiston Hit & Run

NEWS RELEASE from the Maine Department of Public Safety
from Spokesman Steve McCausland - 626-3811

State Police say Evaristo Deus was taken into custody this morning at JFK airport in New York City after he boarded a plane bound for Haiti. Deus was taken into custody by the New York Port Authority about ten minutes before the plane was to depart. He is being held in New York and State Police are making arrangements to send two detectives there to question him and begin the process of returning him to Maine. An arrest warrant was drawn up this morning by the Maine Attorney General’s Office charging Deus with murder.

His blue SUV was located this morning in Portland. A campus security guard located the vehicle about mid-morning in the parking lot of the University of New England campus on Stevens Ave.

Deus was the boyfriend of 32 year old Laudrinha Kubeloso who was struck by a SUV at the corner of Birch and Howe Streets in Lewiston about 4:30 pm Tuesday. She later died at the hospital. The case is being investigated as a domestic violence death.
