SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 4/8/14 at approximately 0437 hours, Trooper Barry Meserve and K9 Zorro received a request for a K-9 track in reference to a burglary in progress on Moose Head Trail in Plymouth. Tr. Meserve was advised that the homeowner had awoken to see flashlights in his barn and two people attempting to steal his property.

When he arrived Tp. Meserve brought K-9 Zorro to the area where the homeowner saw the suspects flee. Zorro headed down a small path and then into an open field. The team tracked for approximately 100 yards before locating a male subject under a tree. The subject immediately complied with Tr. Meserve's orders and was taken into custody.
Another Trooper came to Tr. Meserve's location and took this subject.
K-9 Zorro was off again and he quickly picked up a fresh set of foot prints leading towards the wood-line. They tracked into the woods and into a very swampy area. K-9 Zorro continued in this area for approximately ½ of a mile before coming to a small brook. At this point K-9 Zorro tracked down the center of the stream for approximately 100 yards before heading back into the woods. They then started traveling back towards the roadway. The track led parallel to the roadway for a short ways before coming out onto Moose Head Trail. Zorro then took a left and started heading towards the interstate. After a short distance he crossed the roadway and dove over an embankment. Instantly Tr. Meserve heard a male voice yelling that he wanted to give up. He was then taken into custody without incident. The suspect was very cold and wet so an ambulance was called so that he could be checked for hypothermia.
Both subjects were charged with burglary and they were tied to a number of other burglaries in Penobscot County.
